Eungella National Park is one of Queensland's most ecologically diverse parks. Only 95km from Eimeo, Eungella National Park sits high above the surrounding plains. The park has 860 plant species and plenty of wildlife including the shy platypus. There is plenty to do a Eungulla National Park including camping, walking trails, mountain biking, wildlife spotting and watching, plenty of picnic areas and public amenities. Spotting a platypus in the wild may be a once in a lifetime opportunity. The platypus is a small amphibious Australian mammal that has features alike to a duck (bill and webbed feet), a beaver (tail) and an otter (body and fur). Platypus typically feed a dawn and dusk (we were lucky enough to see a few platypus at 10:30am frolicking around and diving for food.... it was a wonderful site to experience). Broken River offers wheel chair accessible amenities and access to a viewing platform to see the platypus and other wildlife. There is also a cafe at Broken River, operating hours 10:00am - 2:00pm. Check the Eungella website out for more information. Visiting Eungella National Park is definitely worth the drive.

Cape Hillsborough is better known as the place where the rainforest meets the ocean and where kangaroos and wallabies feast at the waters edge at sunrise. Cape Hillsborough is approximately 50km's north from Eimeo. We highly recommend the 4am wake-up alarm to make it to Cape Hillsborough for sunrise and to experience the magic of being up close to some of Australia's most iconic and lovable wildlife. Depending on your fitness level there are some great walking tracks to explore classed Easy - Moderate. When leaving Cape Hillsborough heading back towards the Bruce Highway check out the Diversity Boardwalk, the Old Station Teahouse, Seaforth, Halliday Bay (one of the safest locations to swim in the summer stinger season thanks to its stinger enclosure), the organic and natural store at The Leap or stop for a cool beverage at The Leap pub. A wonderful day out.

The Diversity Boardwalk - a short educational easy walk. The trail is partially boardwalk and the remainder is gravel loop track back to the boardwalk. The boardwalk is accessible and great for kids. There are lots of educational signs along the walk to highlight the wealth of plants and the natural environment. Perfect to do in winter, if you go any other season be sure to have some insect repellant with you.

If you can handle Grade 2 and Grade 3 walking trails then visiting Finch Hatton is a must. Two of the most popular walking trails are the Wheel of Fire Cascades and Araluen Falls. There is nothing more rewarding than enjoying a refreshing dip in the cooling waters of the gorge. For the more adventurous there is also the chance to zip-line through the tree top canopy (bookings are essential) be sure to book before heading to Finch Hatton Gorge. On the way back to Eimeo stop at the Pinnacle Family Hotel for a cool beverage and a famous pie, chips and gravy.

Eimeo Pacific Hotel is definitely a place not to miss for the views. Great anytime of day but sunset looking out over the Bucasia Beach is spectacular. Food and service has been hit & miss, we have heard that recently the owner have been recruiting new staff including a head chef.

Only 4kms from Eimeo, this is a completely different beach. It is a long beach and great to walk at low tide from the fitness stairs at the northern end all the way to McGreadys creek - 4km one way.

Eimeo Surf Club is the place to be on a Friday afternoon. Feel refreshed as you sit by the beach reflecting on your day, drinking a beverage, delving into some food and enjoying some seaside tunes (most Fridays, weather permitting). You will not be able to get this experience anywhere else in the Mackay region and we guarantee that you will not be disappointed. Be sure to book a table. Opens at 4pm 'til late.

Relaxed neighbourhood by the seaside. Great place to lookout and during whale watching season you can typically spot a whale. Seabreeze Hotel is opposite Lamberts Beach. Great place to spend the afternoon, particularly a Sunday as they often have live music from 2pm.

Food scene

Airlie Beach is about 2 hours from Eimeo Over the past 30 years Airlie Beach hasn't changed too much but it is a vibrant happening little destination. There is now a lagoon for swimming and the main marina/harbour where the ferries to the islands leave from is within walking distance of the main drag. Definitely worth heading to Airlie for sightseeing and the food scene. We recommend staying at the Coral Sea Resort Hotel. Easy stroll back into Airlie but away from the hustle and bustle. Great wine and cocktail list and the food is fabulous. Be sure to book. Highly recommend checking out Northerlies Beach Bar and Grill - it is approximately 10km from Airlie Beach heading out towards Cannonvale. It has a range of bars, restaurants and accommodation options.

You will always get a nice coffee and lovely food at the Dispensary. They do breakfast, lunch and dinner. We would recommend booking, particularly for dinner.

If you are looking for consistently fresh seafood and great service try Debbie's Seafood. There is also a cafe located at Debbie's Seafood, unfortunately there isn't a nice outlook but the food is great.
