Buying digital tickets before you get on LIRR saves a lot of money. Pay attention to "Peak/ Off Peak" and during weekends, do take advantage of "City Tickets".
LIRR going west will take you to Bayside for restaurants and bars, Murray Hill for authentic Korean food, Flushing for authentic Chinese food, City Field Mets Stadium for games, and last stop of Manhattan's 30s streets and 8th Ave.
LIRR and subway are two different companies. Tickets are not cross honored.
