Floods Cove has a campground but if you do not take the right to go into the campground and stay left you will find a tiny little neighborhood beach. While it is not pristine soft white sand it is extremely peaceful. No facilities but a book for an hour or two is perfect!

This is a lovely preserve, which includes a large, undeveloped, quiet pond that is an excellent swimming hole. The trail, protected by the Midcoast Conservancy, is marked with visible blazes and is easy to follow, even with snow on the ground. It takes you to the edge of the pond, including to rocky ledges overlooking the water.

This tide pool and rocky shore were inspiration for Rachel Carson's book The Edge of the Sea. A little bit of the sea is left behind in this salt pond every time the tide recedes. People have been coming to this one-quarter-acre tidal pool for many years, to delight at the tidal remnants within, to explore or picnic on the rocky shore, or, as Rachel Carson did many years ago, to conduct scientific studies. It was from this tidal pool that she gathered some of the material for her book, The Edge of the Sea. A foresighted conservationist, Carson was instrumental in starting the Maine Chapter of The Nature Conservancy in 1956.

Modern refrigeration may have obliterated the ice-harvesting industry, but a slice of quintessential New England history survives here. The Thompson Ice House is a working museum dedicated to the methods of traditional ice harvesting. It is believed to be the only commercial ice house on the Register to have stored naturally frozen ice harvested in the traditional way from a nearby pond. It also holds a community ice cream social in July using old-fashioned ice-cream-making methods and the harvested ice. The museum is open 1-4 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays during July and August or by appointment. The site is always available.

Located on the western side of the tip of our peninsula, this trail is so secluded it doesn't even show up as a location on Instagram. Usually, that means a trail is ill-maintained and full of Atrax-swallowing puddles, but not Seal Cove. Seal Cove is a secret paradise. Reviews: "Great place for a relatively easy hike with waterfront views and seals (with patience). The trail goes out around the point of the land and along the water for a good portion of it's length."

At 71 acres, Plummer Point Preserve boasts more than a mile of shoreline, with rocky points, quarries, and views of both Seal Cove and Long Cove. Plummer Point is a gem of DRA’s preserve system. Originally a gift to The Nature Conservancy from the Richardson Family, the preserve is now held in trust by the DRA. Several loop options are available and a winter weather cut-off called the West Ridge Trail helps avoid steep slopes in slippery conditions.

The trail starts out at the edge of fields, with the river in view, wide and slow. It has trails looping through the woods, across old farmland, and near the Medomak River. This 2.7-mile loop trail is generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 55 min to complete. This is a popular trail for birding, cross-country skiing, and fishing, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of the day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.

Birch Point Beach State Park is close, in Owls Head. The 62-acre park sits on Penobscot Bay with glorious views that are oh-so Maine. The park offers the kind of peace you just can't find in some of the larger, more popular towns further south. And while visiting Birch Point Beach might require a drive for some, we can promise you it's worth the journey. One of the most stunning features of the park is the crescent shaped beach offering views of the bay. And if you're looking for a bit of activity, you'll find two trails at either end of the beach.
