Wonderful, moderately priced Italian home cooking. Has a nice little bar as well. Tell Dominick the owner that I sent you. He is a long term friend and a fellow Airbnb host with his wife at their Condotel in Key West Florida. There's nothing bad I can say - this is a favorite restaurant of mine. Italian of course. Say hello from me and he will treat you right.

"Upscale setting for Northern and Southern Indian specialties, plus a lunch buffet and full bar." There are several Indian restaurants in this part of Queens, about 10 minutes by car from the house and many throughout Queens and Nassau County. If you go to Manhattan, there is an entire neighborhood of Indian restaurants, including several that are Glatt Kosher, surrounding the corner of Lexington Avenue and 28th Street (take the 1 Train).

One of two local post offices, the Bayside (zip: 11361) is just west of Bell Boulevard on 42nd Ave., behind the Chase Bank and across the tracks from the Bayside Long Island Railroad Station (there's a walkway across). We are about equidistant from the Oakland Gardens (zip: 11364) Post Office and I recommend that one because there is a free parking lot behind it, although the lines tend to take longer there. The Oakland Gardens Post Office is opposite the Key Foods Supermarket and is part of a large, traditional "stores at curbside" shopping strip on both sides of Springfield Boulevard, on the block south of the Long Island Expressway. There are two free parking lots, one behind each strip of stores on either side of the street, accessed from the south (far) end of the strip.

This is the nearest grocery store to our house in Bayside and you can easily walk the half dozen or so short blocks. Foodtown is a regional chain of smallish, local Superettes selling groceries, baked goods & frozen foods, plus health & beauty products. You'll need to pay for street parking with quarters in the parking meter (or a credit card if they've installed Muni Meters on the block). This location (between 47th & 48 Aves.) is the sleepy end of Bell Boulevard. As you drive north on Bell Blvd. (lowered number Avenues) you will find a gradually increasing density of restaurants of all types. Once you pass Northern Boulevard or 43rd Ave. more or less, "The Strip" begins where most of the night life and dining establishments are, extending past the Chase Bank / Post Office & Long Island Railroad Station (west of Bell on 42nd & 41st Aves. respectively) until about 35th Ave. Continuing about a mile beyone 35th Ave. brings you to the largest shopping center (Bay Terrace) and supermarket (Stop & Shop) in the area. It has pretty much everything, including a Post Office, Movies, and a half dozen restaurants along with the usual chain stores.

Parks & Nature

Walk to Springfield Boulevard at the end of our block and then one short block to 47th Avenue for the long secret stairs down through the forest to this stunning lake and pedestrian path with benches, some secluded. Great for jogging. You can easily park at either end, so if you don't want to walk the stairs, look at the map and follow the local streets clockwise to the other end of the lake where the entrance is level with the walking path. It's a short walk from there to the Alley Pond Environmental Center and the walking / jogging path to the Bayside Marina.

There is a long path extending from Northern Boulevard (just east of the Cross Island Parkway) along Douglaston Bay all the way to Fort Totten and the Throgs Neck Bridge. The Bayside Marina is located half way to the end, where you can walk out on the dock, watch the boaters coming in and out and sit on benches at the little (inexpensive!) restaurant / snack bar right on the water. The entire walk is about 30 to 45 from our house and you can walk, bicycle and jog the path. There is parking available at the far end by driving north on the Cross Island Parkway and exiting at Bell Boulevard and that is about a 15 minute walk to the Marina. Take the pedestrian overpass (near the marina) to cross over the highway into Crocheron Park to sit in the two secret gazebos high on the cliff overlooking the bay. You can also watch baseball teams and tennis players and dog walkers there.

There's a lot more to Jones Beach than just a normal beach. This is one of the great beaches of the world and actually is just part of the gigantic barrier beach that starts in Brooklyn, NYC and ends 120 miles east at Montauk, The Hamptons, Long Island. At Jones Beach, you need to choose ahead of time which parking field ("Field 6" or "West End II" etc.) you're going to. Read up on it on the web. Some Fields feature the boardwalk, a pool and snack bar or restaurant. Others are on the bay instead of the ocean. And there's one that is near the nature walk through the reeds that ends up at the secluded nude beach. You can also search many of the other nearby beaches that are fully open to the public: The Rockaways, Coney Island, Robert Moses are three great examples. Coney Island in Brooklyn has been totally revived and is only about a 30 or 40 minute drive. You can ride the famous Cyclone, etc.
