Drinks & Nightlife

built in the 80's, Nana Plaza claims to be the "largest adult playground" and upon walking into this neon lit, three-storied complex of go-go's and beer bars, one would feel hard pressed to dispute their claim. Not for the shy but definitely recommended as its completely safe and something you certainly wont see anywhere else!

a group of old-school "beer bars." Relaxed atmosphere and a look into a quickly fading era of nightlife. Pool tables at many of the bars, some karaoke, and friendly and laid back staff of Thai ladies at just about every bar.

One of the original post-vietnam era BKK nightlife scenes, started in the mid 70's by an American war vet/entrepreneur. Soi Cowboy is now a lively, walking street filled with neon signs and scantily clad bar girls beckoning sightseers into their respective go-go bars. My favorites - Cactus- a discreet go-go bar about half way down the soi, non-pushy and with great Americana soundtrack owned by a friendly and outgoing American guy. For the real go-go experience try Crazy House on the corner of cowboy and 23.

Bangkok's oldest bar! The Madrid is a small, easy to miss bar on Soi Patpong, a night market and redlight district in the Silom area. Although surrounded by touristy, neon and dancing ladies, The Madrid is quite the opposite, open since the 1960's (and still under same ownership!) T's a bar from a different time, with wood accented table/bar tops, dark color palette and laid back, friendly staff. Good Pizza too! sala Dang BTS will be your nearest station.

true dive bar with a western feel. Open until very late- packed with expats after about 2am. Somewhat of a secret spot, its inside a small shophouse on Soi Si Bamphen, Easiest way to get there would be to tell a taxi "malaysia hotel" and walk from there.

Parks & Nature

Largest public park in Bangkok and a very impressive, beautifully landscaped sanctuary from the bustling sensory overload that is Bangkok. Great for a run, the open air "Rocky style" gym in the southwest corner or just taking in the tropical flora and fauna. Keep an eye out and your camera ready for the monitor lizards - some of which can get up to 4 feet or more in length and like to hang out around the waters-edge!

Food Scene

The only Ethiopian restaurant I know of in BKK, located on the 3rd floor of an elaborately decorated shophouse near the 7-11 on Sukhumvit soi 3. Nice and friendly staff, great food, amazing ambiance (sometimes they have dancers performing traditional Ethiopian dance) and great value. Open until 10pm

Sightseeing

One of the oldest Hotels in Bangkok, and the first hotel pool to be built in the city, The Atlanta is one of just a handful of buildings along Sukhumvit that can claim 50+ years of history. The lobby and commons areas are in amazing condition, and transports you back in time to the 1950's when the hotel was in its prime. Their attached restaurant, serves good western food/breakfast. A not well-publicized "secret" even among many long term residents. Highly recommended!

inside of Fort Mahakan, is a 200 year old community of Thai artisans and shop owners. Beautiful teak wood houses and a tranquil atmosphere make you feel far from BKK. As of this writing (June 2016) the neighborhood is threatened to be demolished by the city. A must see before another piece of history and soul of this city is lost to development!
