The only choice if you want a classic New Orleans white tablecloth Creole lunch (or dinner, but we always do fancy lunch) and you don’t want to go to the Quarter. In particular, Commander’s is known for its 25 cent martinis, bright turquoise exterior and impeccable service. Leave the afternoon open. Reservations recommended. $$$.

Coming from a serious food person and the man who married her, this is the best restaurant in New Orleans. They do brunch and lunch but go for dinner. It’s inventive, it’s delicious, the menu changes daily. We are never disappointed. $$$.

Several dozen kinds of hot dogs and beer, with a great outdoor patio. Easy, cheap and kid friendly. There’s an opportunity to let the kitchen pick your dog toppings. Don’t take it. You’ll wind up with way too much junk on your dog. $.

Donuts, sliders and beer. And sandwiches on donuts. Don’t go here if you’re watching your calorie intake. I’m a purist so I opt for simple, delicious cinnamon sugar donuts but they have all kinds of insane fillings and toppings. Lines are long. Outdoor seating. $.

It’s a toss-up between Parkway and Domalise’s for the title of best po’ boy in NOLA. Parkway is a 15 minute drive from us and can be neatly combined with a trip to City Park. Domalise’s is a 30-40 minute walk or 3 minute drive. Either way, go shrimp or oysters and do like the locals. Order yours “dressed.” That means lettuce, tomato and mayo.

We rarely go here but always want to. Liquor permitting in NOLA strictly forbids anyone under 21 from entering a bar. No one. Not even your tiny baby in an Ergo. Since we often have kids in tow we can’t get in but wish we could. Over 50 beers on tap and 100+ in bottles. A lush, leafy courtyard with water-wasting but atmospheric misters. Go have a beer for us. $.

Okay, I'll admit this isn't my favorite local brewery. But it's 3 minutes from the house! Great BBQ, live music, outdoor terrace, beer flights. Easy hang time.

Frenchman Street is the place for live music. Snug is one of our faves. Small and intimate with decent food on site. Our tips: buy tix in advance and show up early to get the best seats in the house which are actually upstairs, first row. The music is clear but not deafening and you get the benefit of great people watching in addition to seeing the musicians.

Rebirth Brass Band at the Maple Leaf: The Maple Leaf is actually a venerable music venue but when I went I thought it was just some far Uptown dive bar. It’s both. Rebirth is a NOLA classic and the New Year’s Eve we spent watching them was one of the deciding factors that made us move here. They play every Tuesday, tickets are first come, first serve. Doors open at 10 and the show starts at 11. It’s worth the Wednesday exhaustion.

Sometime after seeing Rebirth at the Maple Leaf our visit to Bacchanal pushed us over the edge of “must move to NOLA.” Located in Bywater, the far off neighborhood being rapidly gentrified by hipsters, Bacchanal is an atmospheric oasis of music, wine and meandering conversation. It’s a wine shop where you buy your bottles retail and then head out back for tapas-y small plates, cheese and whatever band is playing that moment. Absolutely no children, don’t even try. They are licensed as a bar and will not let in anyone under 21/without ID.

Parks & Nature

A 350 acre park straight up Magazine Street with a 2 mile loop for walking or running. Beautiful moss covered oaks, several playgrounds, even a small golf course. And, it’s right across the street from the Zoo.

A 15 minute drive to Mid City brings you to one of the 100 largest urban public parks in the U.S. The Botanical Gardens and New Orleans Museum of Art are located here, as is the (free!) Sculpture Garden. Storyland and the amusement park are wonderful for kids, and bikes can be rented. Morning Call has beignets without the BS of Cafe du Monde. It’s just a huge and beautiful place to wander.

Super family friendly destination with more than 2000 animals but also a water park in the summer, a great playground, a carousel and open lawn under the oaks for picnicking. Strollers available to rent. Opens at 10AM, closed Mondays.

Arts & Culture

For those with kiddos, especially in the event of rain or intense heat, welcome to our 2nd home. Daily story hour, arts and crafts projects and enough to occupy those 1-10 years old, for at least a few hours. Warning: the food options are horrendous so bring snacks or plan to eat out. Opens at 10AM, closed Mondays.
