Blues Alley, the historic Georgetown jazz haunt, has hosted so many musical greats in its 50 years it’s mind-boggling. Everyone from Wynton Marsalis to Jimmy Rushing to Dr. John has graced its stage, yet it has never lost its original charm. With live music more than 300 nights a year, you can stop by almost any day and hear world-class jazz.

The Big Board is H Street’s Cheers -- there’s sports talk, cheap beers, a barful of regulars, and everybody knows your name. But the real play when ordering isn’t to go with one of their all-star burgers -- it’s ponying up to the Jalisco Frito, a sandwich combining breaded, buttermilk-brined chicken breast, a sweet and spicy habanero barbecue sauce, pepper jack cheese, two strips of thick-cut bacon, lettuce, and tomato. Also worth mentioning: The thing’s the size of a hubcap. You know you’re getting your money’s worth when you’ve taken six bites and have yet to get to the bun.

Any discussion about the DC music scene invariably includes mention of the 9:30 Club, and justifiably so: Now in its 35th year of existence (and 20th in its present location at 915 V Street NW), the 9:30 has been host to many of the most influential and important musical acts of the 20th and 21st centuries -- from Dolly Parton to 2 Chainz -- and it is as much a Washington, DC landmark as the monuments and the Smithsonian museums. This is a music venue that awes and inspires in equal measure and has served as the cornerstone of DC’s emergence as a must-play tour destination for acts from around the world.

The Howard Theatre has been a landmark of the Shaw neighborhood for over 100 years, originally opening in 1910, and enjoying its third and most recent renovation in 2012. The iconic Beaux-Arts building is on the US National Register of Historic Places, and not just for looks: The venue launched the careers of many artists -- most famously Ella Fitzgerald, winner of an open mic night contest at the Howard in the early 1930s. Since then, everyone from Stevie Wonder and James Brown to Big Boi and Thundercat have played there, and the Howard continues to pride itself on being “The People’s Theatre,” bringing a wide array of unique artists and performers from every genre and demographic possible.

Atlas Arcade is unique in that it might be the only bar that actually features video games in the classic sense, as opposed to board/parlor games. Ideal for children of the '80s, this H Street corridor oasis has plenty by way of classic arcade machines, including Street Fighter II, Big Buck World, Cruis’n Exotica, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It doesn’t hurt that the games are pretty affordable ($0.50/game), as are the primarily canned selection of beers -- it is H Street, after all. As an added bonus, you can play console games spanning the NES, SNES, SEGA Genesis, and N64. Pro tip: Test your skills in a four-player game of GoldenEye 007 using only throwing knives.

Penn Social is basically an adult Chuck E. Cheese’s -- this cavernous, two-story sports bar bombards you with light, sounds, and movement from every direction and angle. You can definitely scratch your gaming itch here: they have board games, shuffleboard, Skee-Ball, foosball, Pop-A-Shot, giant Jenga, and a giant Connect 4 -- basically, there’s no shortage of ways to (not-so) quietly assert your dominance over your friends and coworkers. While the food is “meh” and there’s occasionally a cover charge on weekends, the drinks are stiff enough and competitively priced.

The first distillery to open its doors in DC post-Prohibition aptly named its signature product after a bootlegger rarely seen without his signature green felt fedora. George Cassiday originally sold booze on the sly to Congressmen out of a House office building. But, after loose lips got him caught, he bounced over to the Senate where folks were (and still are?) better at keeping quiet. Cassiday’s son lives in the area, and was the first to receive a case of gin.

Located along 16th St, one of DC’s most coveted avenues, Meridian Hill Park is kind of an oasis. The 13-basin cascading fountain creates this incredibly tranquil setting, which is matched by breathtaking views overlooking the city skyline. Take a deep breath and workout in what is designated as "a garden fit for an aristocrat, [but] open to the public," and is open until dusk.

The National Park Service touts Rock Creek Park as "a gem in our nation’s capital." It also says the 2,000 acres of trees, trails, and tributary provide visitors with "the opportunity to reflect and soothe their spirits through the beauty of nature." The park also offers tennis, golf, aquatic activities, and horseback riding. It's beautiful in all seasons and has miles of trails, which range from flat and wide, like Western Trail, to more technical with elevation, like Valley Trail

It’s a shame more people don’t know that there’s a cascading waterfall just 14 miles upstream from Georgetown. Kayaking and canoeing are allowed, but forget about swimming or wading. (It's dangerous, seriously.)

This lovely eight-mile stretch extends from Silver Spring to Union Station, and once connected the nation’s capital to the main line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. It's perfect for beginners because the Capital Bikeshare program has locations at both its ending and starting points -- so if you're feeling super-spent after biking one way, you can always just hop on the Metro to get back to where you started.

Kitchen contraptions! Each piece is thoughtfully curated and displayed in a way that begs you to think about where it might have a special place in your home. The prices are a little steep, but if you feel guilty splurging on yourself consider it a fun spot for gifts.

Eastern Market’s Hill’s Kitchen is a great place for newlyweds, new homeowners, and newbie chefs looking to stock their kitchens for the first time with high-quality classic pieces. It’s also a perfect place to find a present for the skilled chef in your life. There’s a fair bit of fun and whimsy in the store with their state-themed cookie cutters, and DC-centric accessories, but the staff isn’t playing around (which is good, because, well -- knives).

The Eastern Market is a massive celebration of all things food, centered around a huge indoor market selling any ingredient you could hope for. Add to that a Tuesday farmer's market, a weekend outdoor market for arts and crafts, AND a flea market, and you get the Eastern Market.
