Sightseeing

Siegestor is a three-arched triumphal arch crowned with a statue of Bavaria with a lion-quadriga. The gate was originally dedicated to the glory of the Bavarian army (dem bayerischen Heere zum Ruhme). Today, the Siegestor is a monument and reminder to peace. After sustaining heavy damage in World War II it was to be demolished in July 1945. The new inscription on the back side by Wilhelm Hausenstein says "Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, urging peace".

The Odeonsplatz is a large square in central Munich which was developed in the early 19th century by Leo von Klenze and is at the southern end of the Ludwigstraße, developed at the same time. The square is named for the former concert hall, the Odeon, on its southwestern side. The name Odeonsplatz has come to be extended to the parvis (forecourt) of the Residenz, in front of the Theatine Church and terminated by the Feldherrnhalle, which lies to the south of it. The square was the scene of a fatal gun battle which ended the march on the Feldherrnhalle during the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch.

Marienplatz was named after the Mariensäule, a Marian column erected in its centre in 1638 to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation. Today the Marienplatz is dominated by the New City Hall (Neues Rathaus) on the north side. The Glockenspiel in the tower of the new city hall was inspired by these tournaments, and draws millions of tourists a year. At the east side Munich's Old City Hall (Altes Rathaus) is located. It's a gothic council hall and ballroom and tower, which have been reconstructed.

Arts & Culture

Milestones of European painting – the Alte Pinakothek brings together art from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque and Rococo periods in a collection of astonishing density. The collection comprises more than 700 works of art, representing the most brilliant periods of German, Flemish, Dutch, French, Italian, and Spanish painting. Leo von Klenze’s Neoclassical design (realized in 1836) proved a model for subsequent European museum architecture, and today continues to provide the setting for this treasure trove of Western art.
