On Kal, an old pasture-settlement about an hour walk from the house, there is a mountain hut with amazing views of the Prealpine hills, meadows and Alps. The food is hearty, but good. Great for catching a sunset!

Famously, one of the most beautiful, most scenic and impressive valleys in the Alps, excellent for visiting a legendary waterfall at its end, or for longer high-altitude hikes. It's neighbouring two remote valleys are even more impressive in their solitude and beauty (Matkov Kot and Robanov Kot). For hikes, cycling, climbing, ski-touring, or just admiring with open mouths, this is the spot :)

A 70km long plateau, which is geographically the ending of the Alps - but completely different. It is a vast plain, full of old forests and upland marshes. Great for skiing (Rogla ski resort) or for tranquil hikes, that can range anywhere from a day to several days. Ideal for winter sports too (ski-running) and for cycling.

Mrzlica is another one of the four hill-tops surrounding the house and one of the three (Mrzlica, Kal, Šmohor) with mountain huts serving food in a friendly atmosphere. The ancient beautiful meadows under the scenic top, between the top and Kal, are designated as Natura 2000 park, full of flowers with solitary farms. It takes an 1h:30 to get to the top from the house and is great for combining with Kal, if you have the time.

The easiest of the three neighbouring huts to reach from the house, it is the one surrounded by beautiful meadows, birds of prey flying overhead, and a hill-top village with an ancient church surrounded with ancient linden-trees (a centuries old slovene symbol). Half an hour to 45min of an easy hike, 10 min away with a car.

The biggest natural climbing site in the country (5 min away), Kotečnik, is renowned for hundreds of climbing routes in many sectors, from the easiest to the most demanding. Read all about it here: http://www.slovenia-trips.com/eng/rock-climbing/trip/923/Kotecnik - if you need to borrow equipment (or buy maps and guidebooks) Celje is a great place to do that).

The closest hilltop known for it's misterious atmosphere of beech forests and ancient fairytales of the beautiful but revengefull villas ... You can see it just up from the house, it is an hours hike away, with beautiful views to all sides in between (the top, 1110m is forested) and plenty of oportunities to pick wild garlic in the spring or blueberries in the summer.

To go to the wine-hills of Jeruzalem is like jumping to another planet - I highly recommend a summer-afternoon visit there, where the soft yellow light adorns the wine-hills that grow out of Pannonian plains. It truly is amazing to drive around this micro-world, solely dedicated to wine and stuck in another era, it's damn beautiful and suitable for any part of the year. You can always find something local to eat in one of the many wine-cellars-farms (you can also google and book in advance) and a drink is never in question :) // The place was named by the crusades knights, that stopped there on their way to the real Jerusalem. You can still see the symbols of the Teutonic Order all over.

Just above Žiče, in a remote valley of Saint John's, lies an incredibly beautiful thousand-year-old ruin of a Žiče Charterhouse monastery (with a 500 year old tavern, the oldest in the country), once even the seat of the main priors of the order. I highly suggest you don't miss it! There will probably be some options for gift-shopping of local honey and herbal schnapps.

The oldest city in Slovenia (every guidebook tells you about it), an enormous metropolis in Roman times, today with a famous pagan carnival, that involves the terrible monsters of winter "kurenti" (google it). The old second biggest town in historical Styria (second after Graz) and now the second biggest in Slovenia is immensely beautiful to look at it from an enormous bridge leading to the centre. It has less going on than Ljubljana on event-level, but it's ballet it's world-class! And summer evenings and music are nice especially in Poštna street (čevapčiči there are great). The town lives for its annual festival of music and folk hedonism, Lent. (visit it :) But the greatest charm of town is just strolling through it, observing the wine hills above it, or even climbing to them. Drava valley and surround wine-hills and Pohorje mountains are perfect to cycle to!

The big Tuš supermarket just outside of town is open everyday from 08h-20h, and even on Sundays, from 8h-12h. Don't count on buying stuff on Sunday afternoons as you might end up with an only (poor for shopping) option of a big Petrol gas station in Celje.
