Summer Kitchen sells both prepared foods (sandwiches and salads, e.g. curry cauliflower salad) as well as sandwiches and simple meals (e,g. spaghetti and meatball, pizzas, roasted chicken with mashed potatoes). It's sort of what you'd cook for yourself if you had the time. Prices are not the cheapest, it's sort of a luxury takeout place.

Tilden is just a 10 minute drive from the cottage, and there is hiking, a swimmable lake for warm days, and a botanical garden. For kids, Tilden has an excellent steam engine train ride, merry go round, a small farm where children can feed the animals.

Whole Foods is the nearest grocery store, a ~15 minute walk from the house. They also have a breakfast hot bar and a coffee shack outside in the front, so you can just pull in with your car and grab your coffee or sit down with your coffee/meal in the outdoor seating area.

This Safeway at College and Alcatraz has a huge parking lot (where you could also park for errands near by) and is open seemingly nearly 24hrs. If you need milk at 6am, this is your place. It faces very cute stores for grocery, a great butcher and the like. There is also the well-reputed Philz coffee in the complex.

If you need milk at 6am, this is your place. It faces very cute stores for grocery, a great butcher and the like. There is also the well-reputed Philz coffee in the complex.
Trader Joe's has everything! This one (vs the one on University) has more space, parking is more straightforward and the store itself has wider aisles meaning you bump into other shoppers a bit less than other locations.

Berkeley Bowl is famous for its wide selection of fruits and veggies. Prices are pretty reasonable, and the wide selection includes random groceries like gluten free soba or some obscure cheese made by a local dairy farmer.
Beware of its highly competitive parking lot and peak hours where all of Berkeley seems to have descended on the store. There is another location Berkeley Bowl West which has a bit more breathing room.
