The Cave of Melissani in Kefalonia: Situated just outside Sami, the Cave of Melissani has a strange appeal. It is one of the most significant places for tourists to visit in Greece. Surprisingly, there is a lake inside the cave that has trees and forests surrounding it. The cave itself is B-shaped with two chambers or halls separated with land or an island in the center. The roof of one of the halls caved in centuries ago letting sunlight filter in. The depth of the lake is 20 to 30 meters. When the sun is right overhead at noon, the sunlight hitting the turquoise-blue waters create a magical illusion and the whole Cave of Melissani suddenly feels lit with blue light.

Melissani cave is one rare example of an open cave. The roof fell allowing the sunlight to enter bringing out the amazing colors of the water. The cave is 3.5 km long, 40 m wide and 36m high. The cave is famous for the unique geological phenomenon occuring in Kefalonia where seawater enters in fractures of the rocks in Katavothres (nearby Argostoli) and travels for two weeks subterranean through the island mixing with rainwater only to end up in the Melissani lake. You can visit the cave during summer, from the beginning of May until the end of October, from 9am each morning until 7pm in the evening. I recommend going there around noon for best color effects. Melissani Lake Located near the village of Karavomylos (north of Sami) is another cave system but this one is unique as it is partially submerged. To explore it you need to hire one of the boat men who will happily row you around the stunning water. The sun’s rays through the collapsed roof make for some amazing colours and being partially underground the cool temperature is a welcome change in the very hot months of the year.
