Probably the most famous monument in the world and a symbol of Rome's greatness, the Flavian Amphitheatre, better known as the Colosseum because of the colossal bronze statue of Nero that stood nearby, stands in the archaeological heart of the city, and for almost two thousand years has told an uninterrupted story of fascination and magnificence.

Symbol of Rome included among the new wonders in the world in 2007, as well as in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the largest amphitheater in the world. Visiting it will make you breathe its 2,000 years of history and take you back to the era of the gladiators.

The most internationally recognized symbol of Rome, the Colosseum was inaugurated in 80 A.D. with 100 days of games, including gladiatorial combats and animal fights. It was the largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire and is believed to have packed up to 50,000 people inside. Today nearly 4 million people visit annually.
