In Carmous, near the Catacombs of Kom el-Shuqqafa, is a hill littered with the remains of ancient walls, architectural fragments, and rubble on which Alexandria's only fully intact ancient monument is left standing. Pompey's Pillar rises from the ruins of the ancient and famous Serapeion (Temple of Serapis), which was once used to store the overflow of manuscripts from the Great Library of Alexandria. This column of red Aswan granite with a Corinthian capital, rising to a height of almost 27 meters, actually has nothing to do with Pompey and was instead set up in AD 292 in honor of Diocletian, who supplied food for the starving population after the siege of the city.

The Serapeum of Alexandria was a temple dedicated to the god Serapis, built during the Ptolemaic dynasty. It was one of the largest and most famous temples in ancient Alexandria, known for its vast library and academic center. The temple complex included the Serapeum Library, which was said to have held over 700,000 books. Pompey's Pillar, as previously mentioned, is not actually linked to Pompey, but is named after the Roman emperor Diocletian. The column itself stands at over 26 meters tall and is made of Aswan granite, with a weight of approximately 285 tons. It is one of the largest ancient monolithic columns in the world. In addition to the historical significance of the Serapeum and Pompey's Pillar, the site is also a popular tourist destination in Alexandria, with visitors able to explore the ruins of the ancient temple and view the massive column up close.

It is considered one of the most important tourist attractions in Alexandria, which visitors flock to see the strength of its construction and its towering height. The pillar of the pillar dates back to the Roman era in memory of Emperor “Docletian”, who rid the people of Alexandria from the revolution set up by the leader “Achilles”, so they built this column thanks to the emperor who He restored stability and calm to the city. In the past, it was called the masts column in relation to the high-rise “ship masts”, and then changed its name to “the masts column”, and red granite was used in its construction and its length reaches (20.75 meters). Entry ticket prices to Al-Sawari column: 10 EGP (for Egyptians and Arabs) / 60 EGP for other nationalities
