The Salford Museum & Art Gallery collection is mainly that of a social history collection reflecting the lives of people in Salford. In addition we hold a Victorian Art collection, a small but representative collection of British modern art, and a large collection of Pilkington Ceramics which includes the factory archive. The Local History Library within the museum holds a wealth of material including maps, plans, trade directories and photographs all pertaining to Salford’s history.

Close to Salford University and in the grounds of Peel Park lies Salford Museum and Art Gallery, which opened in 1850 as the very first 'unconditionally free' public library in the UK. Now, you can wander its rooms and marvel at the fantastic collection of artworks on display – it’s a real celebration of Victorian painting.

Still got the victorian street inside! Also free to go inside. We think you only have to pay if there is a special exhibition on.

Salford Museum and Art Gallery was the UK’s ‘first free public library’, which opened in January 1850, followed in November by a museum and art gallery. The building was a mansion house known as Lark Hill, which had been built in the 1790s and has given its name to our famous Lark Hill Place; a Victorian street within the museum. Today, Salford Museum and Art Gallery presents an exciting programme of permanent displays and changing contemporary exhibitions together with a range of events and activities guaranteed to inspire which completes a must visit experience for individuals, families, schools and organisations to come and enjoy.
