Audubon runs a small bird reserve with a lake with an island that gets crowded with water birds that are breeding and use it as a night roost. Get here just before sunset and you will be treated to a great display when all the birds arrive.

Small bird sanctuary around a small waterway - watch birds return just before dark to roost for the night. Lots of water birds hang out here!

1.5 miles from Artsy Abode. *Folks come from all over the world to photograph birds in this one tree.

“Sunsets can be especially spectacular with hundreds of tropical birds returning to their island roost as the Venice FL Audobon Park welcomes photographers and nature lovers off Rte. 41 by the Sarasota County Court...”

(My favorite place) The Venice rookery is a spectacular birders paradise. The rookery is a very small island in the the middle of a pond where birds go to roost and nest. In the winter they show their breeding plummage and mating dances. You will see Great blue heron, Great egrets, Snowy Egrets, Anhinga, ducks, turtles and alligators. Worth the drive and easy access off of 41. Go about 1 hour before sunset to watch the nighttime show. As the sun is setting be sure to look to the left to see the hundreds of bats coming out of their boxes. It’s just spectacular as watching the birds. Be sure to bring along binoculars and a camera.
